Miranda on Visual Milestone Planning

By Jen Potter

Dr. Eduardo Miranda, Associate Teaching Professor in the Software and Societal Systems Department (S3D), Master of Software Engineering (MSE) Programs, led a tutorial on Visual Milestone Planning for Agile Environments at the 16th International Conference on the Quality of Information and Communications Technology (QUATIC 2023) conference in Aveiro, Portugal in mid-September.

A leading scientific conference, QUATIC gathers experts from around the world in industry and academia to exchange ideas and approaches surrounding quality issues in information and technology communications systems engineering and management. The conference’s goals are to foster discussion on furthering the state of the practice, define further directions, and disseminate new methods, techniques, and tools.

During his tutorial Visual Milestone Planning for Agile Environments, Miranda discussed the importance of involving the entire team in formulating a plan and why they should use artifacts such as product backlog items, milestones, and dependencies to create a robust, results-oriented, end-to-end plan suitable for agile projects. Participants learned how to build a hierarchical product backlog, identify and define milestones, construct a robust result-oriented plan, track and report progress, and use milestones to drive iteration planning.

In addition to presenting a tutorial, Miranda was the moderator for a panel discussion with fellow academics and industry experts that explored the evolution of quality. The panelists discussed the compatibility of the academic state of the art and industry, extending beyond the technical and software development processes related to scaling up quality.
