Session Mwamufiya’s Head Start Gift Announcement

By Alexandra Balobeshkina

Session Mwamufiya, founder of Simple Optimum Solutions graduated CMU with  a  Joint MSE+MBA degree in 2007. After seeing our announcement for our  annual MSE Mock Interviews, he reached out  to say, “I can offer something I think would help the students with their job hunt”.

We set up an interview to learn more:

Q: Introduce yourself. What's your background?

I define myself by a combination of my international and multicultural upbringing and a thirst for applied knowledge — the kind that makes a real difference in the communities it touches. I was born in the Congo (DRC), grew up in Côte d'Ivoire, attended boarding school in France, completed undergrad and grad school in the U.S., and have traveled across six continents through work and pleasure.

Q: How did you end up in MSE?

After four years as a software engineer and IT consultant, I was eager to extend my education into business. I kept pushing myself past the technical side of software development to look at the strategic and business impact of the decisions my team and I were making. My initial intent was to apply only to MBA programs, but when I came across CMU's dual master's between Tepper and MSE, the choice became a no-brainer.

Q: How did your career develop post MSE?

With limited opportunities that sponsored work visas, I was fortunate to land a business leadership rotational program at an industrial manufacturing company. Over four years I rotated across divisions and business disciplines. I then leveraged my automation background to launch a finance venture with two partners, combining algorithmic trading with ETF strategies. It proved unsustainable, and we divested — which taught me more about building a business than any of my successes had.

I turned to operations and process improvement: supply chain at Apple, leading supply and inventory management at a couple of startups, then PwC's Operations Excellence practice. After six years in management consulting, wanting to combine all of that business experience with my software background, I started Simple Optimum Solutions (Simple OpS), a SaaS product company where I build business-focused applications using the latest technologies, including AI.

Q:  Tell us about the tool you’re giving to the students. What prompted you to create Mulika?

The first product I built at Simple OpS was an AI voice agent platform for medical practices - one of my closest friends is a plastic surgeon, and his practice was an excellent first use case. Before moving to another business platform, I set up a weekly generated batch of B2B and B2C product ideas, screened against today's marketplace and current technology trends. Mulika came out of one of those batches. Mulika (it's Swahili for “to illuminate”), an AI powered resume optimizer that analyzes your resume's strength against job descriptions, and provides multiple features to optimize it, communicate with recruiters, and prepare for interviews.

Q: What prompted you to use Mulika to give MSE students a Head Start?

I'm a strong believer in helping where you can and paying kindness forward. MSE helped me and I want to return the favor and help the students find jobs by providing a free subscription to the tool I built. My first thought was a small allocation of free access codes to spread word among students. When you reminded me how many international students MSE enrolls, I decided to expand it — a job market you didn't grow up in is hard to read, and that is exactly where a leg up matters most.

Q:  How does it work?

You paste a job posting and your resume and it scores how well the two match. Then it shows you exactly why: the terms the posting screens for, which of them appear on your resume, and which are missing. It flags your weakest bullets and rewrites them in your own voice, tied to that specific role - then gives you a tailored resume to download.

Most résumés don't fail on writing quality. They fail because the posting asks for "CI/CD" and the résumé says "automated deployments" — the same experience, a different word, and the match is lost.

Q: So what exactly do the students get?

I tried to make is as simple and as student friendly as possible:

  • 100 codes, each good for one person
  • Six months of Mulika Premium at no cost

The free plan covers three job-match scores a month, the keyword breakdown, two AI bullet rewrites and a tailored PDF, plus an application tracker. Premium removes the limits and adds the rest of the search: full cover letters, recruiter outreach messages, a LinkedIn headline and About rewrite, and interview-prep questions generated from the actual job description.

Students and alums both benefit, because Mulika covers the whole search rather than the résumé alone: ATS-ready résumés, cover letters, recruiter outreach, LinkedIn improvements, and interview prep tuned to a specific posting.

Q: Do you welcome interaction with MSE students who use Mulika?

Absolutely. I set up a support address specifically to capture and respond to issues and improvement ideas - and student feedback shapes what I build next.

Q: What message would you like to leave for the MSE students?

Your path will not be a straight line, and that's not a failure of planning. Mine went from engineering to business school, through a rotational program, a venture that didn't survive, supply chains, consulting, and finally to building products on my own - and every one of those turns became something I use daily now.

Two things carried across all of it. Stay curious past the boundary of your discipline: the engineers who ask why the business made a decision, and the business people who ask how the thing actually works, are the ones who end up able to build. And when you get somewhere, hold the door. Someone held it for me when I needed a visa sponsor and a chance, and this program is one way of passing that forward.

Q:  What's next for Session?

Addressing significant business and consumer challenges with software and optimized solutions that favor simplicity, efficiency and transparency. I'm currently developing an SEO/GEO autopilot platform to automate and optimize how businesses show up online.
